Metabolic Balance How useful is the diet?

Metabolic Balance: The customized metabolic program promises easier weight loss through the right foods. What's behind it?
What is behind Metabolic Balance?
The goal of metabolic programs is to turn poor food metabolizers into good ones. With an individualized menu, the metabolism is to be boosted so that food is burned faster and we can lose weight.
Because: Every person has an individual metabolism.

  • If two people of the same weight and size eat the same thing, one may lose weight and the other gain.
  •  This is due to the different speeds at which the metabolic enzymes work, for example burning fat quickly or slowly.
  • The speed, in turn, is determined by hereditary factors.

What does such a metabolic program look like?
In a vital profile, weight and body fat percentage are measured for the diet, and dietary habits and family history are queried. Blood analysis reveals whether important vitamins are missing (for example, folic acid) or whether there is too much cholesterol or sugar in the blood. After the blood test, Metabolic Balance gives you a customized diet plan, a list of foods that you should eat or avoid to lose weight. The program runs in four phases:

  • Phase 1: Preparation phases (two days)
  • Phase 2: Strict change (at least two weeks)
  • Phase 3: Loose change (at least one month)
  • Phase 4: Maintenance (as long as you want)
Some of the recommendations for the Metabolic Balance nutritional concept are the same for all participants:

  • No carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, pasta, white flour, sugar, fat, and alcohol at the beginning of the regimen and during the transition phase.
  • The diet focuses mainly on fish and poultry and plenty of fruits and vegetables. There are differences in the types of fruits and vegetables: for example, for one person it is zucchini and watermelon that are supposed to boost combustion, for another perhaps tomatoes and green peppers.
  • An apple a day should be eaten.
The diet is not changed overnight: It is started with a two-week changeover phase in which very few calories are eaten. After that, there is more to eat again to suppress cravings, and "cheat days" may also be on the diet.
  •  This continues until the blood values or weight are back on track.
  • In the subsequent so-called maintenance phase, you no longer have to restrict yourself in terms of quantity, but you should eat a balanced diet. Cheat days are still allowed in the nutrition program.
  • To remain permanently slim and healthy with the metabolic program, it is recommended to leave a five-hour break between meals and not to eat anything after 7 pm.

These foods are allowed with Metabolic Balance
In addition, those who want to lose weight should continue to adhere to their personal food list. On this list stands with most participants much vegetable and fruit and little fat - at the latest now the food of the nourishing plans resemble itself nevertheless very much.

Can our metabolism be accelerated by food?
There are different opinions on this. We can indeed influence our metabolism to a certain extent through food. However, nutritionists doubt that individual foods can increase the speed of metabolic enzymes. This has not been scientifically proven.

Can Metabolic Balance alleviate diseases?
According to the doctor's experience, this diet can be used above all to control complaints such as circulatory disorders, migraines that occur regularly, or allergies. Weight loss is more of a side effect. But: Scientific studies on metabolic conversion do not exist so far. Diseases such as gout, high blood pressure, or diabetes also improve if you keep to your weight loss regimen accordingly.

What experiences do the participants have?
It certainly depends on how comfortable you feel with it and how disciplined you are. Supposedly, there are already 30,000 satisfied participants. "They are not only slimmer but feel altogether more energetic and fitter," according to the experience of internist Wolf Funfack, founder of the Metabolic Balance program.

  • If the weight goes up again, one should adhere more strictly to the plan.
  •  The physician does not consider sport from the beginning to be decisive: "The desire for movement comes with many later by itself, if they are again more mobile.
  •  At the beginning of the metabolism program, participants lose weight even without exercise, and that motivates especially the severely overweight to continue with the program at all."
Is there any criticism of the Metabolic Balance metabolic program?
Volker Schusdziarra, a nutritional physician at the Technical University of Munich, says not. He has no concerns about the menu plans and metabolic diets: "You can't do anything wrong there. Even in the changeover phase, where there is little to eat, attention is paid to vitamin-rich food." But when people purge with such a method, Schusdziarra says, it's because of the change in diet plans and because they take in fewer calories than they consume. "A blood test is not necessary for this."

Munich nutritionist Hannelore Daniel can at least find something to like about the idea of an individual program. More for psychological reasons than medical ones, though: "People are much more likely to stick to personal recommendations than general advice."

Who offers Metabolic Balance?
The method of the internist and nutritionist Dr. Wolf Funfack is offered throughout Germany, through a network of doctors, alternative practitioners, and nutrition specialists. The participation costs starting from 400 euro, which are not taken over by the legal health insurance companies. In the book trade, there are in addition various counselors and cookbooks of Dr. Wolf Funfack (southwest publishing house).

Caution before cheats!
Not every provider of a metabolism program is trustworthy. It is best if someone with medical or naturopathic background stands behind it. Care providers such as Funfack or Lothar Ursinus work to guarantee a certain standard among their network associates.
